Wax Melts 101: How to Properly Use Them in Electric Wax Melters

Have you ever walked into someone’s home and thought it smelled amazing? On the other side of that, maybe you’ve walked into someone’s home and it didn’t smell super pleasant. Having our home smell amazing can make it a much more comforting and happy place. After all, our senses are what set the stage for first impressions, how comfortable we are and much more. Perhaps you’ve turned to candles in the past, but maybe you’re looking for something a little different in the new year. If you’ve never tried wax melts or electric wax warmers, now is a perfect time.

You’ve probably seen them around friends’ homes and wondered how they work. It might even seem a bit intimidating or even scary to try out an electric wax melter if you’ve never tried one before. We assure you, though, that they are wonderful and very easy to use. So, let’s talk a bit more about how to select your wax melts, where to get the electric wax melter and more so you feel more comfortable about using them.

So, Why Is Smell so Important?

Did you know that your sense of smell has a superpower? As we talked about, a scent can be one of the first things you notice when you or someone else walks into your home. Did you know that there’s actually more to how smells can affect you and others? There’s research that suggests that scent can bring back memories more than any of your other senses. According to Medical News Today, it’s called the Proust Effect, and it can transport you back to another time of your life. It can trigger old (maybe even forgotten) memories when you smell a familiar scent from your past.

Discovery.com says, “Scents bypass the thalamus and go straight to the brain's smell center, known as the olfactory bulb. The olfactory bulb is directly connected to the amygdala and hippocampus, which might explain why the smell of something can so immediately trigger a detailed memory or even intense emotion.” So, having a scent in your house that reminds you of your best friend’s home growing up, holidays past or maybe your favorite place to spend time as a teen, can take you on a trip down memory lane and create a more nostalgic and happy feeling for you in your home.

Wax Melts vs. Candles

So, you might be wondering, why should I give up my candles? You might have some tried and true favorites that you’ve used around your house for years that you are not yet willing to give up. There are many reasons why wax melts can be better than candles. You might be wondering, too, are wax melts safe to utilize in my home? Yes, they absolutely are. One of the main reasons we love ScentSationals is that they are non-toxic while some candles aren’t. ScentSationals melts are:

  • Cruelty-free (we do no animal testing on our product and there is no tallow in our product)
  • No soot like candles
  • No flame
  • More fragrance than a candle
  • Cheaper than candles
  • User can quickly change the fragrance

So you can rest assured you aren’t putting toxic elements into the air with your electric wax melter. You can’t always say the same for candles. In addition, wax melters don’t use an open flame like candles do, which can make them a safer option.

Choosing Your Wax Warmer and Wax Melts

First things first, you’ll need to pick your electric wax melter. ScentSationals offers three sizes:

  • Full size™
  • Accent warmers™
  • Mid-size or inverted™

The full-size is the biggest, and this size is where you’ll find the biggest variety of designs and styles. You can go for something plain and understated or something bigger and bolder to match your decor. Accent warmers are a smaller option that plugs directly into your wall to act as a night light as well as a warmer. The mid-size or inverted warmers are smaller than the full-size, yet still offer a pleasant scent when utilized properly.

Once you’ve picked out a warmer or two, you’ll want to pick out a few scented wax cubes. If you’ve never used them before, it might be a good idea to go with lighter more neutral scents to start, such as those found under the fresh category, like fresh air. If this isn’t really your thing, branch out and try seasonal scents or something that simply sounds interesting to you.

How do I use Scented Wax Melts and an Electric Wax Melter?

Now that you have your wax warmer and a few wax melts, it’s time to set up your warmer. While the instructions for using your wax warmer might vary slightly depending on its size and model, these general instructions should give you a good jumping-off point. When it comes to the ScentSational, full-sized wax warmers, you’ll want to do the following:

  1. Find a clear, non-cluttered flat and stable surface in your home.
  2. Make sure the wax warmer can sit completely flat on the surface and that it won’t be easily knocked over.
  3. Install the lightbulb included with the warmer.
  4. Place 1-2 of your wax cubes in the dish at the top of the warmer.
  5. Plug the warmer into a nearby outlet.
  6. Switch the warmer on and enjoy the lovely scents coming from it as the wax melts.

It’s that simple! You might be wondering, though, what do you do once the wax is mostly used up?

  • Place two cotton balls for each wax cube in the little dish to soak up any used wax.
  • Turn off the wax warmer and let it cool slightly to touch.
  • Once the wax has been soaked up use a paper towel to pick it up and wipe the dish clean.
  • Then, you’ll be all set to use your warmer with new wax cubes!

Wax melts and electric wax melters might seem a bit intimidating in the beginning, but they really are simple to use. Hopefully, these instructions have made the process seem a bit easier for you. One thing we do know is that when utilized properly, wax melts and electric wax melters can make your home smell absolutely amazing!
