How Long Do Wax Melts Last and Other Commonly Asked Questions
If you’re interested in trying out wax melts and electric warmers, you’re in the right place. However, if you’re a newbie to this kind of home fragrance system, you probably have a lot of questions. Like how long do wax cubes last? Are wax melts better than candles? Or how do I even use one of these electric wax melters? Not to worry, we have all of the answers to your most frequently asked questions. Let’s dive right in!
How Long Do Scented Wax Cubes Last?
This depends a lot on the type of wax cube and how often you use them. Typically, one cube should last for approximately 8-12 hours. However, this can vary greatly. This depends a lot on the quality of the wax, how your melter works, how often it’s utilized, etc. The best way to determine how long a scented wax melt cube lasts is by trying one in your home in your electric wax melter. The first few times you use a cube, keep track of how long it takes to lose its scent so you have a better idea of how long it will last in your environment.
If you’re wondering about the shelf life of a wax melt, it varies as well. Technically, wax melts don’t have an expiration date like food does. However, most sources put the “best by” date for wax melts as 1-2 years. So, use your melts within a year or so of buying them for the best results.
Can Wax Melts be Reused?
We have good news for you! The answer is yes. You can use wax melts over and over. You should switch them out when they start to lose their scent, though. It’s always good to have a few containers of wax cubes on hand so that when you’ve used up your current ones, you can easily switch them out with no delay. So, when you order, if you’ve found a scent you like, order two containers. Once you get through the first one, you can start using the second, but use it as a signal to yourself to reorder two new packages of wax melt cubes. That way, you’ll always have at least one pack on deck that you can use while you wait for your order to arrive.
Are Wax Melts Better than Candles?
If you’ve used candles at any point in your life, you’re probably wondering which is better–candles or wax melts? They’re both good ways to add a pleasant scent to your home. However, we believe wax melts are a better option. For starters, wax melts don’t utilize an open flame, like a candle. So, it’s less of a fire hazard. In fact, did you know that according to the National Fire Protection Association, “Three of every five (60%) of home candle fires occurred when some form of combustible material was left or came too close to the candle?”
Another great thing about wax melts is the quality and knowing what you’re putting into your air. For example, if you get your wax melts from ScentSationals, we can assure you that they are non-toxic and cruelty-free. With this combination, you’ll still get high-quality fragrance oil with a lasting scent.
How Should You Pick a New Scent?
This is mostly trial and error. You can always start with scents in the “Fresh” Fragrance Category, though, if you want something more neutral. You can also look at fragrances that are listed within the same fragrance categories on our website as well. You might find a few new favorites this way!

What Should You Do with Wax Melts Once They’ve been Used up?
Once the scent is gone from your wax melts, there are a few ways to clean up the mess. Don’t simply add another melt; follow one of these suggestions instead:
- Option #1: Add cotton balls to soak up the majority of the remaining wax. Turn off the wax melter and wait until the wax cools. Then throw away the cotton balls and wipe down the wax dish.
- Option #2: Let the wax cool. Then turn on the warmer for 2-3 minutes. You can then remove the softened wax.
- Option #3: Try our new EZ Clean FlexDishes.
Additional Tips for Wax Melt Newbies
We have a few other things to share that might help you as you get farther down the road with your new electric wax melter and cubes. One of our best suggestions is to turn on your wax warmer for an hour in the morning and turn it on again for an hour in the evening. This will help to fill the room with lasting fragrance. Another tip is to use one scented wax cube at a time and recycle it until the fragrance is depleted. There is no need to replace it until the fragrance is gone. Also, in order to keep your wax warmer functioning, never pry the wax out of the dish. It could damage your warmer. Follow our cleaning instructions if you want to get wax out of your electric warmer.
